Momentum works with European Democrats to escalate World Cup concerns at European Level
Today the European Democratic Party has written to the highest European Authorities, to the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to FIFA head Infantino and UEFA head Ceferin as well as to the Heads of the major European National Football Federations demanding concrete assurances to address our concerns regarding European fans and delegations at the forthcoming World Cup to be partially held in the USA.
Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, said:
“The World Cup must unite people through sport — not create fear, uncertainty or discrimination. This is not a political attack: it is a call for minimum safeguards based on transparency and the rule of law, so that millions of fans and official delegations can travel and participate safely. We must protect our athletes and our fans. For an event of this scale, procedures must be clear, predictable and non-arbitrary.
We have worked closely with our member parties, including with our Maltese member party “Momentum”, to draw up the attached letter requesting the maximum safeguards for European citizens present in the USA for the FIFA World Cup next June and July”.
Momentum Leader Arnold Cassola added: “We cannot accept the behaviour of ICE officers who indiscriminately arrest people just based on their appearance. Dark tanned Europeans, in particular southerners like us Maltese, need strong assurances that they do not risk being targeted simply because of their complexion.
Should such guarantees not be formally agreed, made public and rendered verifiable, the European national football federations and UEFA institutions should also consider the possibility of non-participation of European teams in matches being played on US territory”.
