Momentum Endorses 16th September Solidarity Protest in Valletta

Momentum fully endorses the national solidarity protest called by Repubblika and Occupy Justice for Wednesday, 16 September 2026, at 19:00 at Great Siege Square, Valletta.

Following the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech, Momentum joins civil society in expressing serious concern over the state of accountability in Malta. The party stresses that a single verdict does not erase the corruption, institutional failures, and impunity exposed before and after Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder.

Mark Camilleri Gambin, General Secretary of Momentum, said, “Justice goes beyond individual verdicts, but it requires us to dismantle the impunity that is ingrained in our system, and that enabled this tragedy. We stand firmly with Daphne’s family, journalists, and activists, and urge everyone who demands real accountability to join the protest.”

Momentum calls on the public to attend the protest and demands:

  • End revolving doors: Enforce mandatory 3-year cooling-off periods for ministers, regulators, and senior public officials transitioning into private sectors they previously oversaw. A case in point is the prosecutor lawyer Dr Charles Mercieca, who in May 2020 resigned from his position as a criminal prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Office. He paid off his notice period to leave instantly and appeared in court less than 24 hours later, representing Yorgen Fenech.
  • Fully implement all recommendations of the 2021 Public Inquiry, including anti-SLAPP laws and legal protections for investigative journalists.
  • Stop political patronage: End unilateral ministerial appointments of public agency heads, replacing them with merit-based scoring and mandatory two-thirds parliamentary vetting.
  • Enforce strict ethics standards: Ban all public officials and regulators from accepting gifts, corporate hospitality, or financial perks from entities under their oversight.

There is hope, you can help!
