The quest for truth and justice must triumph over the present feeling of hopelessness

Following yesterday’s verdict, a profound sense of disappointment and hopelessness has understandably taken hold among many honest and civic-minded people in Malta. Justice for Daphne has not been served.

Momentum believes that we must fight back against this feeling of hopelessness. Yesterday’s verdict should not convince us that change is impossible. On the contrary, it should strengthen our determination to build a country where truth, justice, integrity and accountability prevail.

Momentum Leader Arnold Cassola stated, “We can only begin to improve our country if we are prepared to acknowledge the depth of the ethical problems we face. We must recognise the weaknesses in our institutions and the culture that has allowed corruption, abuse of power and the pursuit of quick financial gain to take root.

“But there is also enormous reason for hope. Our greatest source of inspiration is the younger generation. Malta’s youth represent a tremendous opportunity to break with the political and social habits of the past and to build a different future, one based on integrity, merit, civic responsibility and respect for the rule of law.”

There is now even more reason for honest, law-abiding Maltese citizens to be at the forefront of fighting the unethical filth permeating our society, dominated mainly by the logic of fast monetary gain and ruled by politicians with the mentality and attitude of baronial feudal lords.

The country will only get better if we make it so. Momentum is confident that the many honest, decent and civic-minded people in our society can rise to this occasion. The road ahead may be difficult, but hopelessness cannot be our answer. Our response must be to stand up, organise, participate and keep fighting for the Malta we deserve.
