Momentum calls for dialogue between Prime Minister and Swatar residents to protect open space

Momentum expresses its full support for the residents of Swatar and Il-Kollettiv in their efforts to protect one of the locality’s last remaining open spaces and is calling on Prime Minister Robert Abela to meet with residents to discuss how the site can be safeguarded for the public.

The concerns raised by residents deserve to be heard, and meaningful dialogue is the first step towards finding a solution that prioritises quality of life, the environment, and the long-term interests of the community.

Momentum recalls that on several occasions the Prime Minister has publicly stated that, where necessary, Government is prepared to acquire privately owned land to protect important green spaces from development. These commitments created a clear expectation that Government would act when environmentally significant sites are under threat.

Dr Matthew Agius exective.member of Momentum said “Swatar now presents an opportunity for Government to honour those commitments. Protecting this land would demonstrate that promises to safeguard green spaces are backed by action rather than words,”

We urge the Prime Minister to meet with residents at the earliest opportunity and to begin discussions on the acquisition and permanent protection of the site as a public open space.

Momentum reaffirms its commitment to policies that protect Malta’s remaining open spaces, improve residents’ quality of life, and place the public interest ahead of unsustainable development.
