Swatar: Planning Authority chooses developers over the public once again.

Once again, the Planning Authority has chosen to side with developers instead of protecting the environment and the quality of life of residents. Another valley, this time the valley linking Birkirkara with Msida known as the Swatar valley is being lost, despite the growing public demand for more green open spaces rather than more concrete.

Only a few weeks ago, politicians from across the political spectrum publicly pledged to safeguard Malta’s natural environment. Today, those promises ring hollow. Faced with a real opportunity to act, the Government has remained silent.

Dr Matthew Agius, executive member of Momentum said, ”The Government still has a choice. If it genuinely believes that open spaces are worth protecting, it should immediately enter negotiations to acquire the remaining private land at Swatar Valley and preserve it for present and future generations. The Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that Government is prepared to purchase land to protect the environment from development. Now is the time to honour that commitment.”

Momentum stands in solidarity with the residents of Swatar and all those who fought to protect this valley. We will continue to advocate for planning policies that put people, nature and the public interest before speculative development.
