World Autism Awareness Day: Need for clarity and transparency on the future of Wardija Resource Centre.

On the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day, Momentum reaffirms its commitment to building a society that is inclusive, compassionate, and responsive to the needs of persons on the autism spectrum and their families.

The theme for 2026 is Autism and Humanity. Every life has value, chosen to affirm that autistic individuals are given the dignity, support, and opportunities they deserve to thrive. In Malta, while awareness has grown in recent years, serious concerns remain about the direction of policy and decision-making in the sector.

In this context, Momentum expresses deep concern over reports regarding the potential closure of the Wardija Resource Centre. For many families, this school is not just an educational institution, but a vital support system tailored to the specific needs of students with autism and other developmental conditions at post-secondary level.

Momentum member Natasha Azzopardi stated, “Closing such a specialised facility, without clear consultation, transparency, or a clearly communicated  alternative plan, risks undermining years of progress in inclusive and specialised education. It sends the wrong message at a time when our community is calling for stronger protections and investment in services for persons with disabilities”.

Momentum calls on the Government to:

  • Provide immediate clarity on the future of the Wardija Resource Centre
  • Engage meaningfully with parents, educators, and professionals before taking any final decision
  • Guarantee that no student will be left without appropriate, high-quality support
  • Invest further in specialised education services rather than scaling them back

World Autism Awareness Day should serve as a reminder that inclusion is not achieved through words alone, but through concrete policies that prioritise people over convenience.

Azzopardi continued, “Momentum stands in solidarity with individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, and all educators who work tirelessly to provide care and support. Malta must move forward and not backward on inclusion, regardless of neurotype. Inclusion should not be just to tick a box but to give the skills and resources to those who need them to be included in our society throughout their whole lives as has been the objective of Wardija Resource Centre”.
