Partit Momentum notes with grave concern the latest revelations involving Judge Lawrence Mintoff and Prime Minister Robert Abela.

It is alleged that the appointment of the country’s highest judicial office may be influenced by partisan calculations of Prime Minister Robert Abela, personal grievances and political strategy rather than merit and the national interest. Allegations of pressure on court officials, threats against public servants and prejudice against a sitting judge strike at the core principles of judicial independence and separation of powers. In a democratic state, the judiciary must be free from political interference, both in reality and in perception. When confidence in that independence is shaken, the credibility of the entire justice system is put at risk.

Mark Camilleri Gambin,  Secretary General of Momentum said “In any modern democracy, the courts must be free from political influence. The independence of the judiciary is fundamental. When questions arise about a Prime Minister meddling in judicial processes or exerting influence behind the scenes, the only responsible course of action is full transparency. All the facts must come out and reassure us that justice is administered without fear or favour.”

Camilleri Gambin added “Restoring credibility to our institutions is now a very serious and urgent matter. For this to happen, responsibility must be assumed at the highest level. In the national interest and to safeguard the integrity of our democratic system, the Prime Minister should step aside”.

Malta deserves institutions that serve the people, not Prime Ministers who use the Institutions to serve their own greedy and egoistic needs.
