As we observe World Environment Day, we are reminded of our collective responsibility to preserve and protect our natural environment for current and future generations. Today, we highlight the urgent need to safeguard Manoel Island. It is a vital green lung in the heart of Malta that has captivated the hearts of almost thirty thousand Maltese citizens who signed a petition demanding the termination of the MIDI development plans, desiring quality of life over anything else.
Recent news reports have brought to light the widespread public concern regarding the proposed development project, which threatens to transform Manoel Island from its cherished natural state into a commercialised zone. Instead of prioritising short-term economic gains, Momentum advocates for the island to be preserved as a national park, accessible and well-maintained for all to enjoy. Alternatively, we also support allowing Manoel Island to remain largely in its natural, rugged condition, fostering a space for recreation, relaxation, and ecological preservation. Same as we see in the north in Majjistral park where the natural and historical heritage are preserved.
This stance aligns with the proposed long-term Vision 2050 Shaping Malta’s Future, Together: “We will lay the foundation for a greener environment for today’s citizens and generations to come. The journey to 2050 begins now. Let’s build it together.” Katya Compagno, executive member of Momentum, said, “We call on the government to terminate the current contract with MIDI and to ensure that Manoel Island remains protected from any unsustainable development plans. It is crucial that we prioritize the environment over short-term economic interests, especially when the proposed plans threaten the last remaining green space in an area already dominated by buildings and traffic which is becoming an urban nightmare for all who live near or pass by Manoel Island.
Compagno added that “As we mark World Environment Day, we take this opportunity to celebrate the natural beauty and rich biodiversity that make our islands so unique. We urge every citizen, community, and organization to reflect on the role we each play in protecting our environment. World Environment Day is a powerful reminder that the choices we make today shape the Malta we leave for tomorrow. Let us come together to support sustainability, protect our few green spaces and preserve our natural heritage
The irony of MIDI’s plans to attract “quality tourists” is not lost on us. How can we claim to promote sustainable tourism when we risk destroying the very environment that makes Manoel Island unique? True quality tourism should embrace our natural heritage, not diminish it. In fact, Manoel Island’s preserved green space could become a magnet for eco-conscious travelers seeking authentic, sustainable experiences.
We appeal to all Maltese citizens that your voice matters. Continuing to remain silent in the face of environmental degradation is not neutrality but complicity in the potential loss of our natural heritage. Let us unite to protect Manoel Island which is our only green oasis in the heart of Malta.
We must ensure that Manoel Island remains a symbol of natural beauty, environmental sustainability, and public enjoyment for us,the generations to come and for our same collective objective of quality tourism.
