Nadur rape case: What action are Church authorities taking on Deputy Head of school?
The 18 year long Gozitan rape court case puts to shame our country ‘s institutions on two counts.
In first place, it highlights the defects of our legal system, where justice delayed is justice denied. In a country where court cases can take so long, it is appalling that, in 2026, rather than ensuring greater efficiency in our courts, political expediency still rules, with the recent tragi-comedy of Chief Justice appointment on the forefront.
As regards the Gozo courts in particular, the recent disappearance of 6000 euros from the law courts strongroom and this 18 year saga show that something is wrong in the kingdom of Victoria.
The second institution that is failing its mission is the Gozitan Church. Momentum leader Arnold Cassola stated: “Assuming that in these 18 years the authorities were unaware of the identity of the priest-broker in this sad case, now such excuse no longer exists. We all know who the priest is. So it is unacceptable that the Cardinal and the bishop refuse to comment on his despicable behaviour.
The Church Authorities have done a lot over the years to strengthen safeguarding structures and measures. However, to retain their credibility, these structures need to explain how they are addressing the safeguarding concerns related to the present role of this priest. “
