Another day, another objection. Momentum strongly condemns the proposed Villa Rosa Local Plan Review, which represents a blatant betrayal of the public interest in favour of private profit. We call on members of the public to make their voices heard and file formal objections before the consultation deadline, set for tomorrow at midnight.
Executive committee member Dr Matthew Agius said “This review is not a genuine planning exercise, it is a pretext for large-scale overdevelopment. Disguised in planning jargon and misleading claims of environmental stewardship, the review lays the groundwork for a 146,500 square metre mega-development featuring towers of up to 39 storeys. The public, our natural environment, and our cultural heritage are being treated as collateral damage.”
The process has been marred by serious failures in transparency, integrity, and public engagement. A rubber-stamp for upcoming development. Among the many concerns raised, Momentum highlights the lack of impact assessments, including environmental and social studies, and the direct threats to protected sites like Villa Rosa and Ħarq Ħammiem Cave.
Sumaya Ben Saad, an executive committee member, added that “The Villa Rosa Local Plan Review violates both local planning standards and Malta’s landscape. It sets a dangerous precedent for how planning is done against communities, favouring private interests over the collective good.”
Momentum urges every concerned citizen to file an objection before 11 June. Let us not wait for another 25 years to say it would have been a beautiful dream and let’s send a clear message: Malta is not for sale. Submit your objection to [email protected]
