Momentum steadfast in the fight to keep Manoel Island a public green space reinforcing commitment to people over traffic

Momentum has been a consistent and active supporter of the ‘Manoel Island: Post Għalina’ national campaign since its launch in March 2025. To further amplify this crucial cause, Momentum has released a video urging the government to reclaim Manoel Island and transform it into a public green space, not another traffic-choked development.

Matthew Agius of Momentum stated, “Despite MIDI’s glossy visuals, the proposed project would bring over 1,000 vehicles daily to the island, including private cars, service vehicles, tour buses, and marina traffic. At peak times, that’s up to 1 car every 5 seconds crossing the bridge into Gżira, worsening congestion in already overburdened towns. And we must not forget that, sadly, the giving away of Manoel Island for development was agreed and voted for by both PN and PL.”

The project includes 323 residential units, sports facilities, hospitality venues, and commercial spaces. MIDI has also failed to meet its original deadlines and previously blocked access to the island, raising serious concerns about its trustworthiness and long-term intentions.

Reaffirming its commitment alongside long-standing advocates, Momentum continues to work with Moviment Graffitti, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar (FAA), and the many other organisations calling for the concession to be revoked and for Manoel Island to be returned to the public.

We once again encourage everyone to sign the official petition here: https://parlament.mt/en/petition?id=257

Let’s protect our heritage and make space for people and nature, rather than for more concrete, asphalt and cars.
