Momentum reacts to parliament’s approval of another land transfer

Momentum voices its concern over the recent parliamentary vote, yet again, unanimous approval of the transfer of public land in Ħal Luqa to Polidano Properties Ltd.

Arnold Cassola, Chairperson of Momentum, said, “Once again, we are witnessing a practice where public land is being handed over for development without adequate scrutiny, public consultation, or transparency. The 529 square metres of land have now been approved for transfer through a unanimous parliamentary vote, supported by both PL and PN MPs. This adds insult to injury following the Manoel Island saga, where thousands of people signed a petition to safeguard our land, raising serious questions about the commitment of our political representatives to safeguarding public land for the public good.”

Momentum is deeply concerned about the lack of public awareness and debate surrounding this deal, even more so when this was given to Charles Polidano, Ic-Caqnu, who is so well known for his multiple illegalities over many years. In the case of Manoel Island, it was only through sustained public pressure that the tide began to turn. Momentum believes this example must guide us: it is only through civic engagement, media scrutiny, and accountable governance that we can protect our shared resources.

The public deserves better. We must emphasise that this approach of gradually and quietly reducing Malta’s already limited public land through piecemeal deals must come to a halt. Malta’s land is not infinite. Every square metre that is given away today reduces what can be used for community benefit tomorrow.

Momentum demands stronger parliamentary oversight, including a requirement for public consultation prior to the giving away of public land.

We request a national moratorium on further land transfers to private developers until a comprehensive public land strategy is debated and adopted.

Cassola added, “It is no longer acceptable for MPs to vote blindly or for the public to be kept in the dark. Malta deserves a future where public assets are managed transparently, fairly, and with the long-term interests of all citizens in mind”.
