Momentum marks its first anniversary: one year of building, accountability and action

17th January marks the first anniversary of Momentum. It has been a year full of hard work, bold ideas, and unwavering action in defence of transparency, accountability, and citizens’ rights in Malta.

In its first year, Momentum focused on building a strong internal structure, essential for a credible political movement. At the same time, Momentum dedicated energy to policy development, presenting concrete proposals across the economy, good governance, education, animal welfare, open spaces, citizenship, migration, housing, and democratic reform. These policies were shaped through research, public engagement, civil society involvement and expert consultation. Throughout it all, Momentum stood firm in favour of justice, fairness and accountability.

The fight against corruption has also been at the heart of Momentum’s work. One of the first major actions was pushing for the resignation of Minister Clayton Bartolo, following a scandal exposed by Momentum leader Arnold Cassola. Other actions included calls for audits of the Fortina concession and Ta’ Qali gravel cases, with Momentum leading the way in exposing the magnitude of the wrongdoing and holding political bullies accountable.

Momentum consistently challenged administrative failures, defending transparency, accountability, and enforcement. Key campaigns included calls to return Manoel Island, Fort Tigné, and Fort Chambray to the public, putting citizens, heritage, and open spaces above private speculation.

Momentum also acted directly to defend residents’ quality of life and rights. The party organised a parliamentary petition on the issue of tourist disturbance, proposed solutions to the impact of mass tourism, and supported a residents’ protest in Swieqi against overdevelopment and weak enforcement, the issue with sea slime throughout summer and the increase of buoys across Mellieha bay. Momentum stood with communities in Marsaskala, Swieqi, Ħaż-Żabbar, Sliema, Żurrieq and joined national protests to defend environmental protections and public participation.

During this year, Momentum held three Vision Circles, open policy discussions bringing together residents, activists, and experts to debate and shape proposals on the economy, governance, education, open spaces, and animal welfare.

Our first year shows that building a fairer Malta requires persistence, organisation, and the courage to stand with residents and communities.”
