Momentum is still not satisfied with Abela’s redress on the storm damage compensation fund

Momentum is still not satisfied with the government’s change in direction regarding storm damage compensation, that businesses with illegal structures damaged during Storm Harry will be eligible for compensation, after regularising their situation with the Planning Authority. 

Public funds should support honest, law-abiding businesses and residents, not place those who follow the rules at a disadvantage compared to those who do not. Conditioning compensation on regularisation sends out the message that you can break the law for years on end, but then it is ok if you regularise.

Momentum has filed a Freedom of Information request seeking full transparency on the €1 million public fund announced by the Ministry for Transport and Transport Malta Authority.

While Momentum reiterates its full support for assistance to households, organisations and businesses genuinely affected by extreme weather events, the use of public funds must always be governed by clear rules, accountability and fairness.

Dr Matthew Agius, member of Momentum, said, “Given that this scheme involves the distribution of public money, Momentum is asking whether the identity of beneficiaries and the amounts awarded will be made public. Public funds must reward integrity, legality and genuine need. Transparency is a basic obligation when taxpayer money is involved.”

Momentum further asks what kind of appeal/review procedure is envisaged for challenges relating to the refusal or non-award of compensation? Will this be public?
