Press Release: Momentum insists that non-discrimination based on age should be entrenched in constitution
Discrimination based on age is still practised by the Maltese state.
Carmel Asciak, Momentum Treasurer, stated: “The first example that comes to mind is the lower pensions that scores of thousands of Maltese pensioners receive just because they were born before 1962. Even pre-1962 mothers are heavily discriminated against, since they only receive 2 years of social contributions from the state for every child borne, as opposed to the 4 years post-1962 born mothers get.
This discrimination is not limited to elderly people. In fact, the social contributions paid by 16‑18 year olds who start work at age 16 are not calculated when the pension is being worked out. This is another discrimination based on age.
All discrimination based on age should be eliminated and this should be clearly entrenched in our constitution “, concluded Carmel Asciak.
