Momentum in Valletta to defend democracy
We have reached a critical point. The foundations of democracy are seriously under threat. It appears that the Prime Minister is in a state of complete panic. He is afraid that more ugly truths will be exposed and so he is trying to stifle transparency, the very transparency that uncovered the scandals of Montenegro, 17 Black, Electrogas, the hospitals scandal, among others.
Lately, Robert Abela has been protecting Clint Camilleri regarding uncontrolled spending in Gozo. We have a government that has sunk into a situation where everyone is enriching themselves at the expense of the public.
That is why Robert Abela is urgently pushing through amendments that silence the voice of the common citizen, the citizen who demands justice. These amendments effectively kill the citizen’s right to seek justice and truth when institutions fail to do their job.
Instead of addressing the problems and taking measures to prevent such corruption from continuing, they are taking measures that attack the fundamental principles of democracy.
This is an unprecedented and dangerous assault on the right that, until now, every citizen has enjoyed, the right to access tools that have exposed major scandals where millions have been stolen from the people. These tools, possibly the last ones left, are essential to holding leaders accountable and responsible for their actions.
The amendments proposed by Abela and Jonathan Attard, apart from those that grant victims the right to be informed and to automatically receive a copy of the inquiry’s result, are unworthy of a democratic country.
This law directly contradicts the principles of good democratic governance.
Such leadership not only casts a dark shadow over the government’s integrity but also threatens the future of democracy in Malta.
That is why we are here. We are here because the time has come for civil society, organisations, and all people of goodwill to rise, make their voices heard and insist on good governance and the protection of democratic values.
