Momentum expresses full support for UMASA in industrial dispute with the University of Malta

Momentum gives its full support to UMASA, the University of Malta Academic Staff Association, which has declared an industrial dispute with the University of Malta, following a year of unsuccessful attempts to secure a response to its financial proposals for academic staff.

Momentum stated that it is unacceptable for a union to be left without explanation for over a year, despite repeated requests for engagement. Such behaviour, in a modern society, is deeply disappointing and demonstrates a clear disregard for the academic community.

Arnold Cassola, leader of Momentum, said, “The University’s persistent silence regarding UMASA’s salary proposals reflects a worrying lack of interest in the well-being, morale, and professional conditions of its academics. It undermines trust, devalues the contribution of hardworking academics to the institution, and jeopardises the quality of teaching and research that our students deserve.”

Momentum considers that the absence of meaningful communication highlights serious shortcomings in the University’s approach to industrial relations. The ongoing uncertainty is affecting staff motivation, academic planning, and the overall reputation of the University of Malta. Dialogue and constructive negotiation must be met with respect, transparency, and timely responses from the University administration.

Professor Cassola added “We do not want a repeat of the MCAST negotiations, which dragged on for months and years, leaving students in prolonged uncertainty.”

Momentum urges the University of Malta, Malta’s highest educational institution, to engage in good faith to resolve this dispute without further escalation.
