Momentum condemns Marsaskala “regeneration” as an Environmental and Infrastructural Failure
Momentum is raising serious concerns over the so-called regeneration projects currently taking place across Marsaskala. Instead of genuine improvement, residents are witnessing environmental degradation, dangerous infrastructure, and a severe lack of transparency disguised as progress.
Despite heavy government promotion, large sections of the coastline remain neglected. The stretch along Triq iż-Żonqor and the collapsed retaining walls near the water polo pitch have been left in a dangerous state for months, severely compromising public safety. Meanwhile, what should be a pleasant coastal walk in the square has become impassable.
The environmental impact is equally alarming. Construction rubble from removed coastal arches has been left accumulating in the sea, while native plants in St Thomas Bay and established palm trees along the promenade are being systematically removed or destroyed. Complaints to the Local Council and the Environment and Resources Authority remain ignored.
Furthermore, there is a glaring lack of transparency surrounding the public tenders connected to these works, raising serious questions about procurement scrutiny.
Momentum Candidate in the 3rd and 11th Districts, Mark Philip Camilleri Gambin said “Residents are expected to accept environmental destruction and declining accessibility under the guise of regeneration. Marsaskala belongs to its community, not to short-term political optics and questionable public contracts.”
Momentum calls on the Government, the Local Council, and all relevant authorities to:
- Urgently repair dangerous and inaccessible coastal areas, particularly along Triq iż-Żonqor.
- Publish all outstanding plans, procurement details, and environmental assessments.
- Halt further irreversible damage to Marsaskala’s natural and marine habitats.
- Restore pedestrian accessibility in public squares and promenades.
Genuine regeneration must prioritise public safety, accessibility for all, and the preservation of Malta’s natural environment.
