Momentum calls for basic improvements to public transport infrastructure
Momentum urges authorities to take steps to improve public transport by implementing simple improvements that directly affect hundreds of daily commuters. While discussions about large-scale transport projects continue, it is essential to immediately ensure that the system we already have is functional, accessible, and dignified for all who rely on it.
Momentum General Secretary Mark Camilleri Gambin said, “Free public transport was a great idea, yet it seems the government did not truly believe in the project. There is simply not enough infrastructure to allow it to be successful. A key priority must be guaranteeing that every bus stop is equipped with basic shelter, providing protection from rain and extreme heat. It is unreasonable to expect passengers to wait in bad weather conditions without even the most essential infrastructure.
At the same it is imperative that all bus shelters are reviewed for full pedestrian accessibility. Several stops remain difficult to access, particularly for parents with pushchairs, persons with disabilities and older people.”
Momentum also emphasises the need for strict enforcement against illegal parking at bus stops, which regularly blocks buses, delays routes, and endangers commuters. Bus drivers also need to be trained to correctly make use of the provided bus stops with respect to the flow of other traffic. Fines and active supervision are essential to eliminate this irresponsible behaviour.
Having shelters is the bare minimum we should aim for. It is unthinking that brand new roads are being finished without any regard for this essential infrastructure. The next step will be to ensure that all bus stops are well-maintained.
Momentum believes that practical, achievable improvements must become an immediate national priority. Before embarking on ambitious mass-transit projects, we must ensure that our existing public transport infrastructure is accessible, safe, and respectful to all commuters.
Momentum remains committed to advocating for a reliable public transport system that works efficiently, fairly, punctually and with dignity for everyone.
