Momentum today welcomes the long-overdue expressions of support from several representatives of Malta’s two major political parties for the renegotiation of the Manoel Island contract. This notable shift in stance, a delayed awakening to the clear will of the Maltese people, is a positive step towards reclaiming Manoel Island for the public good.
Momentum, alongside dedicated activists and thousands of citizens, has championed the cause of transforming Manoel Island into a national park, accessible to all. It is therefore heartening to witness a growing number of MPs and ex-MPs from both the Labour and Nationalist ranks finally echoing these calls, a testament to the undeniable groundswell of public opinion, evidenced by the recent petition signed by over 29,000 individuals.
“We are pleased to see these representatives, some of whom have had a significant change of heart, now publicly acknowledging the importance of revisiting the Manoel Island concession,” stated Momentum Committee Member, Natasha Azzopardi. “While their silence on this critical issue has been deafening for far too long, we are optimistic that this newfound voice signals a genuine commitment to the interests of the Maltese people over commercial considerations.”
Momentum urges these MPs to ensure their support transcends mere social media declarations. The true test of their commitment will be their willingness to actively pressure for an urgent and transparent discussion of the Manoel Island contract within Parliament. Furthermore, when the time comes, the Maltese people will be watching closely to see if they vote in favour of a renegotiated deal that prioritises public access, green spaces, and the preservation of our national heritage.
“This is about more than ticking a box with a Facebook post,” Azzopardi continued. “The Maltese people demand and deserve tangible action. We will hold these representatives accountable for their promises and expect them to be steadfast in their resolve to see this through. Manoel Island is a national treasure, and its future must be decided by the people, for the people.”
Momentum remains committed to advocating for a Manoel Island that serves the collective well-being of our community and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of the Maltese people are not only heard but acted upon. We call upon all political forces to unite on this issue of national importance and secure a legacy that future generations will thank us for.
