International Volunteer Day
Today is International Volunteer Day. This year’s theme, “Every Contribution Matters,” carries special significance as it marks the launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, which is a global call to recognise and strengthen the vital role volunteers play in building a better, more sustainable future. Momentum joins this celebration by thanking the thousands of volunteers whose dedication continues to support, strengthen, and enrich communities across Malta.
Matthew Agius, executive member of Momentum, highlights that “Across Malta, people give their time and energy in countless ways: in sports clubs, philanthropic initiatives, religious organisations, festas, charities, environmental groups, student organisations, animal welfare, Scouts and Girl Guides, cultural and arts associations, social care organisations, youth groups, civil protection and first-aid teams, community events, village committees, heritage protection groups, disability support organisations, and many more.”
Agius added that “These volunteers are the backbone of our communities. Their work keeps traditions alive, protects our environment, supports vulnerable people, and creates opportunities for people of all ages. Momentum believes their contribution deserves proper recognition from the state.”
Momentum reiterates its proposals that:
- Volunteering hours should be formally accredited and recognised, including the possibility of tax benefits for long-term, structured volunteer service. Recognising volunteering as a form of civic contribution will encourage participation and give volunteers the appreciation they deserve.
- Volunteers should benefit from stronger legal protections, including clearer provisions on insurance and safety standards.
On International Volunteer Day, Momentum honours everyone who gives their time to support others. Their spirit of service is one of Malta’s greatest strengths and deserves respect, recognition, and support.

There is hope, you can help!
