Victory for Democracy Against Violence and Corruption in Serbia
Momentum joins our partners in the European Democratic Party in congratulating Studentska lista on their historic parliamentary election victory in Serbia today. The result marks an end to more than a decade of dominance by Aleksandar Vučić’s Serbian Progressive Party and opens a decisive new chapter on the country’s European path.
The EDP has stood shoulder to shoulder with the Serbian students throughout their struggle. What began as a peaceful grassroots movement demanding accountability following the tragic collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy quickly reshaped the political landscape, holding power to account before taking the fight directly to the ballot box.
Momentum leader Arnold Cassola welcomed the breakthrough:
“Students in Serbia united in the Studentska lista have defeated the violence and corruption of Vučić’s regime. Momentum congratulates our Serbian partners in the European Democratic Party for this great win, which will put Serbia back on the road to democracy, transparency and a peaceful approach to European Union membership. We look forward to close collaboration with our Serbian counterparts as they embark on their mission of leading Serbia to its rightful place, at the heart of the EU.”
Sandro Gozi, Renew Europe MEP and Secretary-General of the EDP, highlighted the wider democratic renewal across the continent:
“An extraordinary victory for democracy, for freedom and for the future of Serbia! We, the European Democrats, are immensely proud. We have stood alongside Serbian students throughout their struggle, because we believe in the European future of Serbia. A future that Vučić had become the greatest obstacle to achieving.”
With the election concluded, Gozi stressed the imperative of institutional respect: “Now that Vučić has acknowledged the Student List’s victory, he must guarantee a peaceful, orderly and democratic transfer of power, in full respect of the vote. Tonight Belgrade is closer to Brussels.”
