Momentum welcomes decision to save Fort Chambray barracks, insists on Grade 1 protection
Momentum welcomes the news that the government wants to save the historic British-era barracks at Fort Chambray in Gozo from demolition and has included them in the amended masterplan for the restoration of the fort. This is a positive development and an important step towards safeguarding Gozo’s historical and architectural heritage.
However, it remains unclear whether the barracks will receive Grade 1 or Grade 2 scheduling. Momentum insists that the government must guarantee Grade 1 protection to preserve the building in its entirety, including its historic interiors, original structure, and architectural features, without alterations that would compromise its heritage value. Whereas a Grade 2 protects only the building’s main architectural features and allows for internal modifications.
Dr Matthew Agius, spokesperson for Momentum, said, “The barracks are in remarkably good condition and retain much of their original character. Preserving only the external façade while allowing substantial internal modifications would fall short of protecting this important historic building.”
Momentum reiterates its call for the immediate Grade 1 scheduling of the barracks, as advocated by Europa Nostra and supported by local heritage organisations. The highest level of protection is essential to ensure that the building’s historical significance is preserved for future generations.
“Protecting Fort Chambray was one of Momentum’s electoral proposals. In May, the party also proposed transforming the undeveloped and unrestored sections of the fort into a national park, giving the public access to an important part of Gozo’s heritage and creating opportunities for cultural activities, education, green space, and sustainable tourism.” Agius said.
Momentum believes that Fort Chambray should be protected and restored in the public interest, rather than having its heritage value compromised by development pressures, especially now that Victoria has been designated European Capital of Culture 2031. Gozo deserves the same ambition for public spaces, cultural heritage, and environmental protection as the rest of the country.
The government should state clearly and unequivocally that the British-era barracks will receive Grade 1 scheduling and that its commitment to saving the building will translate into the full protection of its historic fabric and interiors.
