Momentum attends EAJ-PNV’s annual Party Congress in Spain

Momentum attended Alderdi Eguna 2026, the annual party congress of the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNV), held on Sunday 27 September at the Campas de Foronda in Álava. 

The event brings together tens of thousands of party members and supporters each year and is one of the largest political gatherings in Spain.

Momentum’s policy advisor, Karl Anthony Borg, attended at the invitation of EAJ-PNV through the European Democratic Party (EDP) network, of which both parties are members. At the congress, he met with Imanol Pradales, the head of government of the Basque Autonomous Community and Aitor Esteban, the leader of the EAJ-PNV, as well as Androulla Kaminara of ALMA-Citizens for Cyprus, a centrist political party represented in the Cypriot Parliament.

He also met with Peter Loge, Associate Professor at The George Washington University and a former senior aide to Senator Edward Kennedy, House Chief of Staff and Obama administration official.

The visit is part of Momentum’s continued effort to build working relationships with like-minded parties across Europe and to learn from their experience in government. 

Speaking after the event, Karl Anthony Borg said:

“We are grateful to EAJ-PNV for their invitation and warm hospitality. For decades, EAJ-PNV has shown that a party rooted in its community can govern responsibly, defend strong local institutions and remain firmly committed to the European project. Malta can learn a great deal from the Basque experience, particularly in building an economy driven by research, innovation and skilled jobs, something Momentum wants Malta to commit to seriously. That is the kind of long-term thinking that we need.”

Momentum will continue to strengthen its links within the European Democratic Party and with sister parties, bringing back ideas and good practice that can help deliver the real change Maltese and Gozitan citizens are asking for.

EAJ-PNV (Euzko Alderdi Jeltzalea / Partido Nacionalista Vasco) was founded in 1895 and is a member of the European Democratic Party. It leads the Basque Government, with Imanol Pradales serving as Lehendakari (President) at the head of a coalition government. Alderdi Eguna is its annual party day, held at the Campas de Foronda, Álava.
