Billy J. McBee, calls on the Planning Authority to refuse application PA/05857/26 in St Paul Street, Rabat, a catering platform with tables and chairs directly opposite the Ta’ Ġieżu church. It follows more than 830 objections against a near-identical proposal, PA/05005/26, opposite the Ta’ Ġieżu church in Valletta, now awaiting decision.
“We in Valletta know the cost of unchecked commercialisation of public space, and I stand fully with the residents, the local council and the church community of Rabat,” Mr McBee said.
The shared concerns are clear: Noise that disturbs worship and disrupts a place of prayer. Platforms and furniture that block narrow streets during church and community events. Creeping encroachment: tables today, canopies tomorrow.
Valletta carries a further duty as a UNESCO World Heritage City protected under the World Heritage Convention and the Constitution.
UNESCO Decision 47 COM 7B.114 (2025) found current planning policies insufficient to safeguard its setting.
McBee calls on the Planning Authority to: Refuse PA/05005/26 in Valletta. Refuse PA/05857/26 in Rabat.
Rabat residents may still object until 25 September 2026.
