Tourism Minister’s response to power cuts shows a government that reacts instead of planning
Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela’s attempt to downplay the impact of the recent nationwide power cuts on Malta’s residents, businesses and reputation shows a government that reacts rather than plans. Instead of explaining how the government will prevent future failures, the Minister argued that other countries have also experienced power outages and that climate change is to blame.
Graziella Spiteri, executive member of Momentum, said: “Climate change is not an unforeseen event. Scientists have warned for decades that heatwaves would become more frequent and more intense. Responsible governments prepare critical infrastructure instead of treating every heatwave as an unexpected crisis.”
For years, the government claimed its policies were guided by sustainability. Yet when faced with the predictable consequences of climate change, there appears to be no discussion of long-term planning or resilience. Instead, the public is told that other countries face similar problems.
Momentum believes Malta deserves better than excuses. The tourism industry depends on reliable infrastructure. Visitors expect electricity, air conditioning and functioning accommodation. Every tourist whose holiday is disrupted is less likely to return or recommend Malta to others.
Ms Spiteri added: “Malta cannot continue pursuing ever-increasing tourism numbers without making the necessary investments to support them. Every additional resident and visitor places greater demand on the electricity network, water supply, transport system and public infrastructure. Sustainable tourism is about ensuring Malta has the capacity to accommodate people safely and reliably.”
As a medical doctor, Minister Jo Etienne Abela should also recognise that prolonged power cuts are not merely an inconvenience. Many people depend on electrically powered medical equipment or refrigeration for life-saving medicines such as insulin. For these vulnerable citizens, prolonged blackouts can pose a serious risk to their health.

Cover with solar panels Malta’s many parking areas, etc. Malta needs resilient infrastructure and a long-term strategy that protects residents, safeguards vulnerable people and gives visitors confidence in the country’s future.
