Momentum supports Manoel Island protest and calls on the public to defend Malta’s future national park

Momentum expresses its support for the protest in defence of Manoel Island and encourages all those who believe in protecting public spaces to attend.

Katya Compagno, executive member of Momentum, said, “The people have come a long way in this struggle. For years, citizens, NGOs and activists have worked tirelessly to ensure that Manoel Island is returned to the public. When the Government decided to spend €43 million to regain the concession, it promised that Manoel Island would become a national park for everyone.”

Yet, at the first opportunity to choose between the public interest and commercial interests, the Government has once again given in. Instead of safeguarding this unique site, it has allowed illegal private commercial activity to continue and even expand, undermining the very promise it made to the Maltese people.

Momentum believes that this is not the time to give up. On the contrary, this is the moment to stand together and remind the Government that promises made to the people must be honoured.

Compagno added, “We urge everyone who cares about Malta’s natural, historical and public heritage to join the protest. The future of Manoel Island depends on continued public pressure and civic engagement.”

Momentum thanks the organisations that have kept this issue alive for years. Without sustained public pressure, Manoel Island would never have been returned to public ownership. That same determination is now needed to ensure that the Government honours its commitment to create a national park for present and future generations.

The protest is taking place tomorrow, Friday 24 July, at 6.00 pm outside the entrance to Manoel Island, directly in front of the padel courts.
