Swieqi measures in favour of residents must be implemented now
Before the elections, following the continuous outcry by residents, Local Council and Momentum, government promised various measures to protect residents victims of vandalism and unable to get their night’s rest.
Natasha Azzopardi, Momentum Executive member and Swieqi resident, stated: “The first promise was implemented a few days after the elections. A couple of police patrols are on call between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Despite being understaffed, these patrols are doing their work admirably and are responding to the best of their ability to the various calls for help by the residents. Minister Glenn Bedingfield did well to visit and thank the Swieqi and Pembroke Community police yesterday”.
Arnold Cassola, Momentum leader and Swieqi residents, added: ‘However, two other promises have completely been ignored. The police have not been given the tools to fine on the spot the offenders, being tourists or local residents, for putting garbage out on the wrong day, vandalism or noise disturbance at night.
Moreover, after the headline trumpeting that 30 new cameras were to be installed in sensitive spots of Swieqi, residents have not heard anything more about this”.
“We are now in full summer and residents are bearing the full brunt of such inaction. Now that you have ended gloating over your “raba’ rebha”, just implement what you have promised. Residents need a good night’s rest before getting up for work in the morning”, concluded Arnold Cassola.
