Momentum Calls for Speaker of the House to be Nominated by Third Parties

Momentum believes that the strong result achieved by Momentum and ADPD in the recent general election has created a unique opportunity for Malta’s political institutions to take a meaningful step forward in democratic maturity.

In light of the thousands of Maltese and Gozitan voters who chose to support third-party alternatives, Momentum is proposing that the PL and PN reach agreement on the nomination of a Speaker of the House put forward jointly by Momentum and ADPD.

Such a gesture would send a powerful message that Parliament belongs to all citizens, not only to the two traditional parties. It would acknowledge the growing number of voters who are seeking a different political voice and who have clearly expressed their desire for a more pluralistic democracy.

For decades, both the PL and PN have supported or tolerated numerous distortions and corrective mechanisms within Malta’s electoral system that have overwhelmingly benefited the established parties. While these measures may have served partisan interests, they have often done little to strengthen democratic representation or political diversity.

Momentum Leader Arnold Cassola stated: “The appointment of a Speaker nominated by the country’s third parties would be a modest but important step towards correcting this imbalance. It would demonstrate that Malta’s political class is capable of rising above partisan calculations and recognising that democracy is strengthened when all legitimate political currents are respected.

Momentum therefore calls on both major parties to show political maturity and democratic vision by supporting this proposal. The thousands of voters who placed their trust in Momentum and ADPD deserve to know that their voices matter and that their contribution to Malta’s democratic life is valued.

The next legislature should begin with a clear signal that Parliament is the House of all the people, not merely an extension of the duopoly that has dominated Maltese politics for generations.”
