Momentum proposals: Making Malta a Clean Energy Leader
Malta is one of the EU’s slowest movers on the ecological transition. While countries across Europe are racing to decarbonise, our government treats renewable energy as an afterthought. We remain overwhelmingly dependent on imported fossil fuels, exposed to volatile global energy prices and nowhere near meeting our climate obligations. Today, Momentum announces three proposals to put Malta on a credible path to clean energy independence.
Achieve Malta as a zero-carbon country by 2050 through comprehensive environmental policy
Malta is trailing far behind the pace of change seen across the industrialised world. This is a political failure and Momentum in Parliament will push for the immediate adoption of a serious environmental policy that prioritises research and investment in renewable energy, including solar, wind, wave, green hydrogen, and geothermal sources, to make Malta carbon neutral by 2050.
Accelerate offshore wind farms and solar farms
Malta has abundant sunshine and strong coastal winds and we are barely using either. The process to build offshore wind farms and solar installations has been painfully slow, held back by bureaucratic inertia and a lack of political will. Momentum in Parliament will push to speed up the planning and approval process so we can start generating clean electricity for Maltese homes and businesses at scale.
Facilitate renewable energy cooperatives and community energy sharing projects
Right now, energy is something that is centralised in Malta. Someone else generates it, someone else sets the price, and you pay the bill. Momentum in Parliament will significantly increase support for citizen owned renewable energy projects, by helping more communities set up their own renewable energy cooperatives. Groups of households sharing solar panels, splitting the output, and cutting their costs together. Neighbours producing clean energy for themselves.
Mark Camilleri Gambin, Momentum’s candidate in the 3rd and 11th districts, said: “Malta’s energy future cannot keep depending on gas pipelines and political promises. We have the sun, the wind, and the sea. What we lack is the political courage to use them. Momentum’s plan sets a clear target of zero carbon by 2050, backs real investment in renewables, and puts power literally in the hands of ordinary families. It is time for Maltese families to own their energy, not just pay for it. This is a Bidla ta’ Vera.”
