Momentum congratulates Mill-Istudent għall-Istudent campaign on historic KSU result
Momentum congratulates the entire Mill-Istudent għall-Istudent team on their historic result in yesterday’s University of Malta Student Council elections.
For the first time since the 1990s, KSU will not be entirely held by a single politically affiliated organisation. Four seats, including the presidency, have been won by independent candidates who ran on a platform of transparency, accountability, and genuine student representation. That is a remarkable achievement.
Momentum’s Secretary General Mark Camilleri Gambin said: “What happened at the University of Malta yesterday is a reminder of what democracy looks like when people are given a real choice. Nick Muscat and his colleagues ran a principled campaign and they made history. That is something anyone who loves democracy should celebrate.”
The result also carries a wider message.
Momentum has long argued that Malta’s institutions are dominated by two entrenched political forces, and that the state must actively ensure that independent voices and smaller parties can participate fully and fairly in democratic life. Today’s outcome at KSU shows what becomes possible when competition is genuinely open.
“Students voted for accountability and transparency over habit and partisan loyalty,” Camilleri Gambin added. “If you’re ready to vote beyond the duopoly, you aren’t alone. The momentum for real change stretches far beyond the university campus.”
Momentum calls on all newly elected KSU representatives to work together constructively in the interests of students. Momentum has, and will continue to, put forward concrete proposals for a fairer, more pluralistic democracy as part of its general election manifesto.
