Momentum opposes “monstrous” Swieqi overpass, calls for people-first planning
Momentum strongly opposes the proposed pedestrian overpass connecting Swieqi and Pembroke, which risks becoming a four-storey concrete structure imposed on residents without proper planning or consultation.
This is a similar case to the Msida pedestrian crossing. After all the expert advice, Minister Chris Bonnet is going ahead to put yet another monstrous crossing in the heart of Msida.
Momentum leader Arnold Cassola said, “This project is another example of government incompetence. A major road was recently built, prioritising cars, yet no serious thought was given to pedestrian safety. Now, instead of fixing this failure properly, the only solution being presented is a massive overpass that will permanently scar the area.”
Even more concerning is that alternatives were not properly considered. Infrastructure Malta and Transport Malta failed to seriously explore a pedestrian underpass, despite this being a proven solution. Malta already has successful examples, including the underpasses in Floriana near Bieb il-Bombi and Triq Sant’Anna, and the Birkirkara bypass connecting to Mater Dei. These were built decades ago, yet today’s government prefers oversized, intrusive structures.
Momentum proposes an underpass at this location, offering a safer, more practical, and less visually intrusive solution.
Cassola added, “Following the Msida pedestrian crossing saga, unfortunately, this is yet another case of ignoring expert advice and highlights a serious failure in governance. Residents were not properly consulted, transparency was lacking, and key assessments, including visual impact and pedestrian usability, have not been presented.”
Momentum stands with the residents of Swieqi and Pembroke, who feel ignored and sidelined. At the same time, the opposition Partit Nazzjonalista has failed to effectively represent its concerns.
People are encouraged to attend the protest held this Saturday in Swieqi at 10 am, organised by the local council
