Who is profiting from the illegal berths in Cospicua?
Momentum is demanding full transparency on the allocation of berthing spaces in the sea in front of the American University of Malta in Cospicua, following serious revelations about an obscure and scandalous government concession.
Former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, together with Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri, handed over the sea in front of AUM, as well as the airspace above it, through a concession agreed behind the people’s backs. When Robert Abela was appointed Prime Minister, this concession was kept secret from the public.
As a result of this obscene contract, it has emerged that the five metre foreshore in Cospicua legally belongs to AUM. Despite this, over the past ten years, Transport Malta officials closely aligned with the Labour Party have been issuing temporary berthing permits to yacht owners with political connections, in a stretch of sea that does not legally belong to the Maltese people.
Momentum committee member Matthew Agius questions how such permits could have been issued in the first place. If the sea legally belongs to AUM, on what basis were these berths granted? Who authorised them? And who financially benefited from this arrangement?
Momentum stated: “These berthing spaces cost thousands of euros. Have there been any investigations within Transport Malta into how these permits were issued? Who has been profiting from these illegal rentals? Did the AUM receive money from Transport Malta for this? The people of Malta were not only robbed of their public sea, but were also unknowingly used to generate quick money for others. This blatant abuse and theft at the expense of the Maltese people cannot be allowed to continue.”
Momentum is calling for an immediate investigation into Transport Malta, the cancellation of all illegally issued berthing permits, and full public disclosure of all agreements and revenues linked to the Cospicua foreshore.
