Momentum General Secretary Mark Camilleri Gambin Elected Deputy Secretary General of European Democratic Party at the EDP Congress
Momentum’s General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin was elected as Deputy Secretary General of the European Democratic Party, at the party’s Congress in Bilbao, Spain. This marks a significant milestone for Momentum’s partnership with European partners at the EDP and a victory for third-party politics in Malta.
This appointment signals a renewed commitment within the EDP to prioritise human-centric innovation and the protection of fundamental rights in the digital age, issues that are central to Momentum’s agenda in Malta. Following his election, Camilleri Gambin said “We are at a crossroads where we must decide if technology will dictate our democracy or if democracy will shape our technology. I am honoured to take on this role to ensure that Europe chooses the latter, rejecting the ‘efficiency trap’ and ensuring that innovation serves the worker, protects our children from being monetised by social media, and defends our fundamental rights. We do not fear the future, but we insist it works for the people.”
Camilleri Gambin’s appointment secures a direct line of communication within a major European political family, serving as a vital bridge between Maltese activism and the wider European dialogue. This platform allows Momentum to amplify local perspectives on the continental stage, ensuring that critical issues like child safety online and environmental protection are effectively represented in the broader European conversation.
Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party commented on the appointment: “We are delighted to welcome Mark Camilleri Gambin to his new role as Deputy Secretary General. Both he and Arnold Cassola bring a long-standing pro-European commitment and a reform-minded approach that continues to strengthen our presence in Malta. Together, we will work for a more effective and fairer Europe, firmly committed to transparency, the fight against corruption, and the defence of the rule of law, key principles to protect our citizens and resist populist pressures.”
