Ta’ Qali and Jason Micallef’s Omerta’
It is now two months that Jason Micallef is refusing to give the information requested, with regards to the environmental disaster he has provoked in Ta’ Qali. While the authority has remained silent, Momentum will continue to apply the necessary pressure for the information to be made public.
- On the 4th September we at Momentum submitted the official FOI request, seeking detailed information on the gravel at ta Qali.
- On the 14th October, we followed up with a reminder and notification that the time window as stipulated by the Freedom of Information act had elapsed.
- On 28th October we sought the assistance of the Information and Data Protection Commissioner, who has promptly assured us that he will look into the matter and ensure that the public authority respects its obligations under the FOI act.
The information requested is:
- Providing all documents, reports, and communications that explain the necessity of the gravel works. This includes any project proposals, internal memoranda, and reports from or to the Environmental Resources Authority, as well as any Environmental Impact Assessment or similar environmental evaluation conducted for this project.
- Providing all documents related to the contracting and financial aspects of the project. This includes a copy of the public tender notice, the award documents identifying the successful contractor or supplier, and the final invoices or cost breakdowns detailing the supply, transport, and laying of the gravel.
- Specifying the source of the gravel (local quarry, importer, or other).
- Identifying the individual or body that authorised the final decision to proceed with the gravel works.
Momentum General Secretary Mark Camilleri Gambin said, “We will not allow the truth to be hidden behind silence on this issue. Thousands of euros must have been spent on this disaster, which has not only killed the vegetation in the family park in Ta’ Qali but has also rendered the area dangerous for any children playing there. The facts must come to light, and this green open space must be restored.”
There is hope, you can help!
