Momentum lauds Clyde Caruana for backing the President on the Binance issue

Momentum expresses its satisfaction at Minister Clyde Caruana who today backed President Myriam Spiteri Debono in refusing the Binance “so called” donation.

Momentum Chair, Arnold Cassola, stated: “Finally, somebody in government is seeing the light, as well as the risks inherent in this supposed donation. The MFSA has already warned in 2020 that “Binance was not authorised to operate in the cryptocurrency sphere and was not subject to regulatory oversight by it”. This warning was repeated in 2021 by MFSA.

The dangers of the Binance donation to MFCC are twofold

  • That the company and CEO have already been found guilty of money laundering in other countries;
  • That Binance wants to have the personal details of each medical patient that would benefit from its donation, and would deal directly with that patient rather than with MFCC.

It is shameful that government exponents, including the Prime Minister, Edward Zammit Lewis and Rosianne Cutajar, have come out against the President for her rightful stand in favour of ethical behaviour in politics.

One now hopes that even opposition leader Alex Borg will swiftly withdraw his rash initial reaction, when he stated that if the Binance donation is legal, a lot of good can be done. MFSA had already warned us all in 2020 and 2021″, concluded Prof. Cassola
