Momentum backs students’ parliamentary petition against the EU “Chat Control” as signatures surpass 1,000

Momentum today announces its strong support for the parliamentary petition, initiated by Students For Liberty Malta, opposing the EU’s proposed “Chat Control” regulation. The petition calls for the rejection of measures that would mandate the scanning of private communications and has now gathered more than 1,000 signatures.

The proposed regulation raises reasonable fears of the erosion of fundamental rights to privacy and our freedom of expression. The petition’s success is driven by students and young people. This underscores the widespread concern for the preservation of digital freedoms.

Mark Camilleri Gambin of Momentum, who last month published a video explaining the proposal, commented on the matter:

“Imagine if every private message you sent was opened and scanned before it was delivered. This is what the EU’s ‘Chat Control’ proposal aims to do to our digital lives. With the laudable goal of protecting children, it would force services to scan everyone’s private photos and chats, even encrypted ones, effectively turning your own phone into a spy. The real danger is that once this scanning tech is built, it could be used to look for anything. As we highlighted in our video, there’s a much better way. We can make children’s accounts safe by default with automatic protections and then make use of targeted police work to hunt actual criminals. We must protect children and protect everyone’s privacy, without treating all of us like suspects.”

Momentum joins Students For Liberty Malta in calling upon Malta’s representatives, NGOs, and activists to defend the fundamental rights of all citizens.

We urge the public to get informed and take a stand by signing the petition.
