Huge turnout at today’s National Protest with a powerful message that the Government cannot ignore

Momentum today expressed encouragement from the massive turnout for the national protest, “Ġustizzja għal Artna: Irtirawhom Issa!”, while questioning the government’s integrity and willingness to listen to the public’s call. The streets of Valletta were filled with a diverse crowd, united in their demand for the withdrawal of the government’s controversial planning proposals, which would heavily impact residents’ peace of mind and quality of life.

“Today the streets of Valletta were filled with a huge crowd and a clear message that cannot be ignored,” the party said in a statement. “This demonstration was a powerful rejection of the government’s dangerous proposals and devious ‘consultation’ process.”

Momentum praised the thousands of citizens who marched together, sending a powerful, unified message in defence of Malta’s environment and quality of life. The party believes the sheer scale of the protest leaves the government with no alternative but to abandon its current course of action.

Mark Camilleri Gambin, General Secretary of Momentum, commented on the situation: “What a great turnout. Will the government steamroll over this crowd? Will they continue with fake consultations or will they actually listen and rescind their outrageous proposals?”

The party expressed its sincere gratitude to the numerous NGOs and their dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to organise the successful and impactful demonstration. Their vociferous and unwavering commitment to this cause has been instrumental in mobilising the public and focusing national attention on the critical issues at stake.

“The question is now whether the government has any integrity left to listen,” Camilleri Gambin continued. “We stand firmly with every person who showed up today to defend our country. This is an unequivocal message that the people will not stand by while our country’s present and future are sold off for the benefit of a few. Today, the Maltese have affirmed their determination that we want to continue enhancing the beauty of our country and not to allow senseless political decisions to destroy it”.

Momentum remains committed to demanding a genuine and transparent consultation process on planning and environmental policies, and to the immediate withdrawal of the current harmful bills.
