Residents secure breakthrough with Booking.com & Airbnb on problematic rentals
In a significant victory for community action, proactive Swieqi residents have successfully engaged with both Booking.com and Airbnb to tackle issues with problematic rentals in their area. We are thrilled to report that both platforms have agreed to help with enforcement on their booking systems and that they have been provided with the official list of MTA licensed properties in Swieqi.
Momentum General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin said: “This is a good step forward and shows what can be achieved when a community works together. While we maintain that the primary responsibility lies with the authorities to take this kind of initiative, we applaud the efforts of these hardworking residents who are safeguarding their locality.
This fantastic news comes as our national petition to address noise and waste has now surpassed 1,700 signatures, proving the widespread demand for change.”
We strongly encourage residents in other impacted areas like Marsascala, Valletta, and Qawra, all of whom have been working hard to apply the necessary pressure, to consider taking this route. Let’s keep the momentum going!

F’rebħa sinifikanti għall-komunitajiet tagħna, residenti proattivi ta’ Swieqi involvew ruħhom b’suċċess kemm ma’ Booking.com kif ukoll ma’ Airbnb biex jindirizzaw kwistjonijiet b’kiri problematiku fiż-żona tagħhom. Ninsabu kuntenti li nirrappurtaw li ż-żewġ pjattaformi qablu li jgħinu bl-infurzar fuq is-sistemi tagħhom u li ngħataw il-lista uffiċjali ta’ proprjetajiet liċenzjati mill-MTA fis-Swieqi.
Is-Segretarju Ġenerali ta’ Momentum, Mark Camilleri Gambin qal: “Dan huwa pass tajjeb ‘il quddiem u juri x’jista’ jinkiseb meta komunità taħdem flimkien. Filwaqt li nsostnu li r-responsabbiltà primarja hija tal-awtoritajiet biex jieħdu din it-tip ta’ inizjattiva, nilqgħu l-isforzi pożittivi ta’ dawn ir-residenti li qed jissalvagwardjaw il-lokalità tagħhom.
Din l-aħbar meraviljuża tasal hekk kif il-petizzjoni nazzjonali tagħna biex nindirizzaw l-istorbju u l-iskart issa qabżet l-1,700 firma, u dan juri xewqa mifruxa għall-bidla.”
